Temba C. Kamara

An East Bay resident raised in San Francisco, California, Temba is a lifelong storyteller trained in digital media. Firmly rooted in his community, with a deep value for stories told by the historically invisibilized, Temba has exercised his abilities and Broadcasting & Electronic Communications degree throughout The Bay: as Communications Manager at the city of Richmond’s transformative RYSE Youth Center, a blogger for San Francisco’s historic TRUE clothing, and co-founder of San Francisco/Oakland-based art collective {ego}, among other points in his journey. The through-line of said journey was always a mission to elevate multi-generational voices through expressions of music, visual art, and activism — of community defining itself for itself.

With TMAG’s Steering Committee, in addition to digital media consultation, Temba brings a unique perspective that intersects his appreciation for youth expression, the storied history of pan-African music, the urgency of preserving stories that are otherwise disappeared, and the power of closing the gap between generations as well as cultures. As a first-generation Ugandan/Mozambican-American he holds a sensitivity around what it means to continue culture in a terrain that actively and passively mistranslates it. He believes the work around cultural memory ensures we all see each other with wide, open eyes and TMAG’s mission of passing old traditions to young people with new ideas, through instrumentation, works toward that seeing.
