Alex Calder

Alex has initiated and actively contributed to a variety of musical, artistic, and cultural endeavors involving Sub-Saharan Africa for several decades. In San Francisco, CA, Alex founded and curated the FINE ARTS CENTER for EAST AFRICA, sponsoring and hosting numerous exhibitions, academic lectures, and educational presentations at UC Berkeley, Center for African Studies, Stanford University, and the Smithsonian Institute, Museum of African Art. Alex has travelled to Africa, researching and documenting current artistic and traditional musical practices and methods in Uganda, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Egypt, and South Africa, documenting individual artists, and bringing their work to a wider audience.
